Research findings from seven CHRP-funded grants were presented at the American Public Health Association 140th Annual Meeting held October 27-31, 2012. Research focused on a range of populations, including HIV positive Latino immigrants, transgender women, African American bisexual men, and Chinese massage parlor workers.

CHRP funds Collaborative HIV/AIDS Policy Research Centers
In March 2012, CHRP awarded grants totaling $4.2 million over four years to support two Collaborative HIV/AIDS Policy Research Centers: The California HIV/AIDS Policy Center, which is a collaboration between the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA), and The AIDS Policy Research Center, which is a collaboration between the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies at the University of California, San Francisco (CAPS) and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF). The UCLA/APLA policy center includes the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center and Charles Drew University as subcontracting partners, while the CAPS/SFAF policy center includes Project Inform as a subcontracting partner.

UC launches initiative to test an HIV prevention pill in California
The California HIV/AIDS Research Program (CHRP) of the University of California today (April 17) announced that it has awarded grants totaling $11.8 million to three teams of investigators to test a potential HIV prevention pill among high-risk HIV-uninfected persons in California.
The studies also will examine new strategies to engage and retain HIV-infected persons in care and treatment. These combined strategies are expected to help curb the HIV epidemic in California.

This is an update regarding the current status of the California HIV/AIDS Research Program (CHRP). The 2011-12 State budget proposed by Governor Brown includes a $650 million reduction in funding to the University of California. Because of this severe reduction, many programs funded directly from the Office of the President are being considered for potential decreases in funding. However, despite this difficult budget climate, the current UC budget for fiscal year 2011-12 assumes that funding for CHRP will be maintained at its current level. While we are encouraged by this positive development, we continue to maintain caution until a final State budget is passed and signed.

CHRP 2011 Call for Applications on Hold
As you are probably aware, the 2011-12 State budget proposed by Governor Brown includes a $500 million reduction in funding to the University of California. Because of this severe reduction, support for many programs funded directly from the Office of the President will likely need to be reduced or eliminated. As a result, the current UC budget for fiscal year 2011-12 assumes that funding for the CHRP will be eliminated.
Based upon the proposed UC budget for FY 2011-12, we have decided to put our planned Call for Applications on hold, until such time that we have more clarity regarding the budget situation.

Considering TLC+ In California: Proceedings of a Think Tank on HIV Testing, Linkage to Care,
Plus Treatment
On May 18, 2010, the California HIV/AIDS Research Program (CHRP) and the California Coalition of Local AIDS Directors (CCLAD) co-sponsored a statewide Think Tank called Considering TLC+ in California. The specific goals of TLC+ (Testing and Linkage to Care Plus Treatment) are twofold: first is to increase the number of HIV-positive people who know their serostatus and are engaged in care and treatment to improve their individual health outcomes and, second, to reduce the incidence of HIV infection.
The purpose of the Think Tank was to begin to discuss implementation of TLC+ in California and to identify the key issues that need to be addressed in order to move forward. Sixty-four planners, policymakers, treatment and care providers attended the meeting.

CHRP released its general 2010 Call for Applications describing new grant opportunities, requirements, eligibility, review criteria, and the application process. This Call for Applications is for proposals in the research field areas of Basic Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Sciences and Social and Behavioral Sciences. CHRP issued a separate Call for Applications for proposals in the research field area of Research on Systems of Prevention and Care on February 25, 2010.

New Funding Opportunity at CHRP
In collaboration with researchers at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), grant recipients will conduct research that evaluates the effectiveness of Patient-Centered Medical Homes (PCMH) for persons with HIV /AIDS. The research will examine cost, quality, patient satisfaction, and patient self-management related to organizations and service delivery systems. Selected organizations will receive funds to support these research activities and to strengthen their capacity to demonstrate a PCMH model for this research project. See 2010 Call for Applications
